Why Are SiC Ceramic Foam Filter Used for Molten Iron and Copper Filtration

Sep. 30, 2026

Why Are SiC Ceramic Foam Filter Used for Molten Iron and Copper Filtration?

Silicon carbide (SiC) ceramic foam filter plates are the preferred filtration medium for molten iron and molten copper casting, due to their outstanding high-temperature performance and chemical stability.

1. Extreme high temperature resistance

Molten iron and molten copper have much higher pouring temperatures than aluminum alloy. Molten copper reaches 1100–1200°C, while cast iron is 1350–1450°C. SiC foam ceramics maintain stable physical structure at these ultra-high temperatures. It will not soften, deform or melt when contacting hot iron or copper melt.

2. Excellent chemical inertness against iron & copper melt

Silicon carbide is chemically stable with molten iron and molten copper. It does not react, dissolve or release impurities into the metal liquid. It avoids secondary contamination and keeps the metallurgical quality of iron and copper castings.

3. Strong mechanical shock resistance at high temperature

When high-temperature molten iron or copper flows through, the filter suffers severe thermal shock. SiC ceramic has great thermal shock resistance, resisting sudden temperature changes. It will not crack or break under metal impact, preventing filter fragments from entering the casting.

4. High dirt-holding capacity for heavy inclusions

Iron and copper melts produce large amounts of oxides, slag and refractory particles. The three-dimensional interconnected porous structure of SiC foam filter can capture large quantities of solid slag and inclusions. It effectively removes oxide slag, sand and non-metallic impurities, reducing internal defects of iron/copper castings.

5. Suitable for heavy castings and large gating systems

Compared with thin fiberglass mesh, SiC ceramic filter plates have high structural strength. They are widely used for heavy-duty iron and copper castings, such as: pump housings, valve bodies, ingots and hydraulic parts. It can handle large metal flow rates without collapsing.

6. Improve mechanical properties and inspection pass rate

By removing slag and stabilizing metal flow, SiC filters reduce slag inclusions, porosity and shrinkage defects. The finished castings have better mechanical strength, fewer leaks and higher NDT inspection pass rates.

FAQ

1. What PPI grades are common for SiC ceramic filters for iron and copper casting?

Common options: 8 PPI, 10 PPI, 12 PPI. Lower PPI means larger pores for higher flow rate for heavy castings.

2. Will SiC filter react with molten copper or iron?

No. High-quality SiC foam ceramic is inert to molten iron and copper, no chemical reaction occurs during casting.

3. What casting defects can SiC filters reduce for iron/copper parts?

It removes slag and non-metallic inclusions, reduces slag inclusion, porosity, shrinkage and surface blemishes, improving pressure tightness of valve and pump castings.

4. Do you support export and custom specifications?

Yes. We provide customized sizes and complete export documents for global buyers.
