SiC Ceramic Foam Filter – Application & Performance

Sep. 23, 2026

SiC ceramic foam filter is a high-temperature filter media specially developed for metal casting.

Featuring outstanding high-temperature resistance, thermal shock resistance, high mechanical strength and corrosion resistance, it is suitable for molten metal at 1350℃–1500℃.

Unlike alumina and zirconia filters, its phosphorus-free binder formula prevents phosphorus contamination of molten metal, making it a core filtration consumable for ferrous metals and high-grade non-ferrous alloy casting.

Widely adopted in precision casting, industrial machinery, rail transit, new energy equipment and other sectors, it purifies molten metal at the source, optimizes casting processes, and significantly improves casting quality and production benefits.

1. Main Application Fields

With excellent compatibility for high-temperature molten iron and copper alloys, SiC ceramic foam filters are primarily used in ferrous metal casting and medium-to-high temperature non-ferrous alloy casting, covering conventional castings to high-end precision industrial components. They work well in batch production, custom high-grade casting and continuous pouring processes.

1.1 Ferrous Metal Casting (Primary Application)

It is the standard filtration consumable for grey iron, ductile iron and ordinary cast steel, used for medium & large heavy-load, high-toughness iron castings.

● Typical parts: automotive engine blocks, crankshafts, brake components, machinery bases, wind turbine hubs, machine tool beds, valve bodies, rail transit iron castings, heavy-duty pressure-bearing structural castings.

● Process compatibility: static pouring, continuous dynamic pouring, batch mould pouring.

● Custom pore sizes, thicknesses and dimensions are available according to pouring weight and runner size to accommodate high-flow and long-duration high-temperature pouring.

1.2 Medium-to-High Temperature Non-Ferrous Alloy Casting

● Suitable for molten copper alloys including brass and bronze.

● It avoids deformation, erosion and impurity leaching that occur with conventional filters at high temperatures, filling the gap in high-end precision non-ferrous casting filtration.

● Typical parts: precision copper valves, hydraulic copper parts, conductive copper components, mechanical bronze bushings, premium hardware alloy castings requiring high purity and compactness.

1.3 High-End Precision Casting & Deep Processing

● Ideal for applications demanding strict air tightness, mechanical properties and surface finish, such as new energy equipment, precision instruments, fluid equipment and military supporting castings.

● It effectively mitigates common precision casting defects including slag inclusions, blowholes and shrinkage porosity, meeting requirements for finish machining, polishing and non-destructive testing.

2. Application Performance & Benefits

The 3D interconnected porous structure of SiC ceramic foam filters removes impurities through physical interception, deep adsorption and flow turbulence reduction.

It purifies molten metal and stabilizes filling patterns, bringing measurable improvements in quality, process stability and cost efficiency validated by mass industrial production.

2.1 Efficient Purification & Defect Elimination

● It captures and retains oxide inclusions, furnace slag, suspended non-metallic particles and secondary oxidation debris in molten metal, preventing impurities from entering the mould cavity.

● Compared with unfiltered casting, it greatly reduces slag holes, blowholes, sand inclusions, entrapped slag, shrinkage and cracking.

● The overall reject rate can drop by 15–25%.

● Its phosphorus-free formulation avoids leaching foreign elements into molten iron and copper alloys to preserve material integrity.

2.2 Smoothed Metal Flow & Stable Casting Process

● As molten metal passes through the porous network, turbulence, vortexing and splashing are suppressed, converting chaotic flow into steady laminar flow.

● This reduces mould and sand erosion which causes sand sticking and sand wash.

● Uniform cavity filling eliminates misruns and cold shuts, improving process consistency for complex castings with large flow rates and long gating systems.

2.3 Enhanced Mechanical Properties of Castings

● Cleaner molten metal with fewer inclusions yields denser, more uniform grain structures and fewer stress concentration points.

● Castings show improved compactness, air tightness, tensile strength, toughness and wear resistance.

● It resolves common issues such as low fracture resistance, poor wear performance and insufficient pressure resistance in iron castings, as well as unstable air tightness and thermal/electrical conductivity in copper alloy parts, meeting heavy-load, high-pressure and high-precision service requirements.

2.4 Production Cost Reduction & Higher Productivity

● Lower scrap rates cut re-melting, raw material and rework labour costs and raise yield.

● Improved surface finish and fewer internal defects reduce machining allowances, lowering consumption of cutting tools, equipment wear and machining time.

● The filter resists high-temperature erosion and fragmentation during pouring, so production lines run continuously without frequent shutdowns for replacement.

2.5 Wide Process Compatibility for Harsh Conditions

● SiC maintains exceptional thermal stability up to 1500℃.

● It withstands rapid temperature swings without cracking, softening or deformation.

● Uniform pore distribution and high porosity deliver reliable filtration while maintaining good permeability to prevent flow blockage or retardation.

● Compatible with manual pouring, automated casting and continuous casting & rolling lines for mass production of various casting sizes.

3. Core Advantages Summary

● For ferrous and medium-to-high temperature non-ferrous casting, SiC ceramic foam filters are an upgraded alternative to traditional wire mesh and ordinary ceramic filters.

● They provide superior filtration accuracy and high-temperature performance to eliminate casting quality risks at source.

● They help foundries boost product competitiveness, lower overall manufacturing costs and upgrade casting processes for high-precision and mass production.
