The Challenge

The foundry was running an automated gravity die casting line. The line was experiencing a 12–15% pinhole and dross-related scrap rate. Metallurgical analysis traced the defects to folded oxide film and dross entering the gating system during the pouring cycle.

The existing resin-coated fiberglass mesh produced visible smoke and odor on the pouring floor, and operators had to place each mesh piece manually — adding cycle time and causing inconsistency in mesh placement.

The Solution

The foundry switched to CANGENDAS® carbonized smokeless fiberglass filter mesh. The 1.5 mm mesh was cut to a standard size compatible with the line's automatic dispensing unit.

A vacuum pickup on the casting machine lifts one mesh piece at a time and places it at the sprue base before each cycle. No preheat required — the mesh is placed dry. No manual handling, no additional cycle time.

Results

● Pinhole and dross defect rate dropped from 12–15% to under 4% within the first production week

● No visible smoke or odor on the pouring floor — the carbonized mesh burns off volatiles before delivery, so almost no gas is generated when molten aluminum first contacts the mesh

● Mesh held up through the full pour with no fiber shedding or blowout

● Automatic dispensing worked reliably with the pre-cut mesh size — no jamming, no misplacement

● No change to cycle time or gating setup
