Zirconia Ceramic Foam Filter Plate for Molten Steel Casting

Sep. 27, 2026

Why Molten Steel Need to be Filtered by Zirconia Ceramic Foam Filter?

Molten steel is cast at temperatures between 1550°C and 1650°C, featuring high thermal energy, strong chemical activity, and powerful scouring abrasion.

Many common filter materials fail under these extreme conditions. Fiberglass mesh softens and melts at steel pouring temperatures. Alumina ceramic filters, while heat-resistant, are prone to chemical reaction and thermal shock cracking when contacting high-temperature molten steel, which may introduce foreign impurities and cause filter fragmentation into the casting.

Zirconia ceramic foam filters are engineered specifically for steel casting applications.

The zirconia base material delivers outstanding high-temperature stability, superior thermal shock resistance, and excellent chemical inertness against molten steel.

When exposed to hot steel, the filter body will not melt, soften, decompose, or undergo chemical reactions.

It maintains structural integrity and will not release particles that contaminate the molten steel.

The filter adopts a three-dimensional interconnected foam porous skeleton structure. It works through two core mechanisms: mechanical interception and adsorption capture. Large slag inclusions, sand particles, and refractory debris are physically trapped on the surface and inside pores. Fine oxide inclusions adhere to the internal pore walls via surface adsorption, removing tiny impurities that cannot be eliminated by simple ladle refining.

Besides impurity removal, the filter also serves as a flow regulator.

When turbulent molten steel passes through the interconnected pore network, chaotic swirling flow is converted into smooth laminar flow. This suppresses splashing, reduces air entrapment, and minimizes re-oxidation of molten steel caused by air contact. Less re-oxidation means fewer new oxide inclusions generated during pouring.

The benefits translate directly to casting quality improvements. Filtered steel castings show dramatic reduction in typical defects: slag inclusions, blowholes, pinholes, cold shut, and hot cracks. The internal metallographic structure becomes denser and more uniform. Mechanical properties including tensile strength, elongation and impact toughness are improved. The casting surface finish is cleaner, lowering rejection rate, machining cost and scrap loss.

This filter is widely applicable for carbon steel, low alloy steel, high alloy steel, stainless steel and other steel grades.

It can withstand rapid temperature change during pouring without cracking. It is the preferred filtration solution for high-value steel castings such as pump bodies, valve parts, machinery components and automotive steel castings.

Zirconia Ceramic Foam Filter Plate for Molten Steel Casting

Zirconia ceramic foam filter plates are the premium filtration solution specifically designed for molten steel casting. Their unique combination of ultra-high temperature resistance and metallurgical stability makes them the ideal choice for steel foundries.

1. Extreme high-temperature resistance for molten steel

Molten steel pouring temperature ranges from 1550°C to 1650°C, far higher than aluminum, copper or iron melts. Zirconia foam ceramics retain rigid structural integrity at these extreme temperatures. It will not soften, warp or deform under long contact with high-temperature molten steel.

2. Excellent chemical compatibility with molten steel

High-quality zirconia material is chemically inert to molten steel. It will not react, dissolve or release foreign impurities into the steel melt. It avoids secondary contamination and protects the metallurgical quality of steel castings.

3. Superior thermal shock resistance

The filter undergoes severe thermal shock the moment cold filter contacts hot molten steel. Zirconia foam ceramic is engineered to withstand drastic temperature fluctuations. It resists cracking and fragmentation under the violent impact of fast-flowing steel, preventing filter fragments from entering the casting.

4. 3D interconnected porous structure for capturing steel slag

The continuous open-cell foam structure efficiently traps silica slag, oxide films and tiny refractory non-metallic inclusions generated during steel melting and pouring. It greatly reduces slag inclusion defects inside steel castings.

5. High structural strength and large dirt-holding capacity

Compared with SiC filters, zirconia filters have better performance under ultra-high temperature steel melt conditions. The robust ceramic skeleton can sustain heavy slag loading and large metal flow volume, suitable for high-grade steel castings with strict quality requirements.

6. Improve casting quality and NDT pass rate

By removing non-metallic inclusions and stabilizing turbulent steel flow into laminar flow, it minimizes slag inclusions, porosity and shrinkage defects. The finished steel castings gain better mechanical properties and higher non-destructive testing pass rates.

7. Multiple PPI specifications available

Common PPI grades include 10PPI, 15PPI and 20PPI. Low PPI for large flow rate; higher PPI for finer filtration of micro inclusions, to match different steel casting requirements.

FAQ

1. Why choose zirconia filter instead of SiC filter for molten steel?

Molten steel reaches 1550–1650°C. Silicon carbide may oxidize under high-temperature steel melt conditions. Zirconia maintains stable performance in steel casting environments, without oxidation or chemical reaction.

2. What defects can zirconia filters reduce for steel castings?

It removes oxide slag and non-metallic inclusions, reduces internal slag inclusions, porosity and shrinkage cavities, improving mechanical performance and NDT qualification rate of steel castings.

3. What PPI grades are commonly used for molten steel filtration?

10PPI,15PPI,20PPI are widely used. Lower PPI for high flow rate in large castings; higher PPI for finer filtration for high-precision steel parts.
